Discovering the Legacy of Prophet Muhammad: Lessons and Inspiration from His Sirah (Biography) part 1

As stated by the previous generations, learning the Sirah (biography) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is part of Islam. They placed great importance on and respected the history of the Prophet ﷺ, just as they did with the Quran.

Ali bin al-Husain (son of Al-Husain bin ‘Ali bin Abi Thālib), known as Zaynal ‘Abidīn, once said:

"We were taught about the battles of the Prophet ﷺ, whether he participated or not, just as we were taught about the Surahs of the Quran." (Al-Jaami’ li Akhlaaq Ar-Raawi wa Aadaab as-Saami’ 2/195)

Al-Imām Az-Zuhriy rahimahullāh Ta’āla said:

"In the knowledge of the battles of the Prophet ﷺ, there is the knowledge of both the hereafter and the world." (Al-Jaami’ li Akhlaaq Ar-Raawi wa Aadaab as-Saami’ 2/195)

Similarly, the words of Ibnul Jauzi rahimahullāh highlight the importance of Sirah of the Prophet ﷺ. He said:

"I saw that being occupied with learning the fiqh and only listening to the Prophetic hadiths is hardly enough to purify the heart, except if it is combined with learning the raqāiq (that soften the heart) and studying the history of the righteous ancestors." (Shaidul Khathir p. 228)

He also said:

"The foundation of sciences is knowledge, and the most beneficial of sciences is to study the journey of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions: {Those are the ones…} (Shaidul Khathir p. 228)

Imam Az-Zuhri stated that in studying the history of the Prophet ﷺ there is knowledge of both the afterlife and the world. Meanwhile, Ibnul Jauzi emphasized that studying only the fiqh and hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ is not enough to improve one's heart, unless combined with studying raqāiq (things that soften the heart) and the history of the pious predecessors.

Knowing the history of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ not only helps us to know and understand his teachings, but also motivates and provides inspiration for us to follow in his footsteps in our daily lives. Therefore, we should pay attention and seriously study the sirah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

By studying the history of the Prophet ﷺ, we will get to know and understand how the Prophet ﷺ carried out his mission as the Messenger of Allah. We will learn about how the Prophet ﷺ faced various challenges and enemies, how he led the Muslim community and brought them to happiness in both this world and the afterlife.

However, it is important to note that studying the biography of Prophet ﷺ should not be done recklessly. We must ensure that the sources we use to study his biography are reliable and free from dubious elements.

In Islamic perspective, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is not like ordinary figures. He was a man who directly witnessed heaven and hell. In some hadiths, Rasūlullāh ﷺ was shown heaven and hell by Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla and he saw them directly. This created a very strong belief in himself. Therefore, the history of the Prophet ﷺ cannot be compared to the history of figures such as Hitler, Buddha, Kong Hu Cu or other figures.

Unlike these figures whose histories are only considered great in some aspects of life and even imperfect, the history of the Prophet ﷺ is considered the only history that is perfect in all aspects of life according to scholars. The history of the Prophet ﷺ is also the most complete and detailed history that has ever existed, starting from his childhood, youth, until he passed away.

We can emulate the behavior and actions of the Prophet ﷺ, whether as a father, husband, leader, or friend. We can learn how he communicated, spoke, and interacted with others. How he faced enemies and how he led his people. We can also emulate the tolerance and security applied by the Prophet ﷺ in dealing with non-Muslims.

Therefore, the history of the Prophet ﷺ is not just a history that needs to be known and studied, but also a history that needs to be applied and practiced in our daily lives. The history of the Prophet ﷺ is a life history full of lessons and examples, a history that can serve as a guide for us all. Let us make the history of the Prophet ﷺ an inspiration in shaping ourselves to become better people.

The life history of the Prophet ﷺ is rich in lessons and examples in various aspects of life, such as as a child, head of household, father, friend, leader, and others. The history of the Prophet's wars and dealings, both with Muslims, non-Muslims, or enemies, are all documented and provide lessons.

Unlike the history of Prophet 'Isa 'alayhis salām, which does not provide valid information about him as a father or husband, even in the Gospel considered sacred by Christians. The history of the Prophet ﷺ is so complete and detailed from all aspects of life and provides amazing examples.

Therefore, the history of Prophet ﷺ is a special and extraordinary history that cannot be found in the history of any other figures.
